Cajon Drums
What is a cajon?
A cajon is a box drum made out of wood. Llosh's cajons are unique because they are playable on all 4 sides, allowing the drummer to create a variety of sounds and mimicking a drum kit.
The origin of the cajon (Spanish for “box” or “crate”), or box drum, is not entirely clear. However, one origin theory tells us a story of African slaves in Peru, South America. As a form of suppression and control, slave masters did not allow the slaves to play their music. In intimate revolt and refusing to live without music, slaves began playing drums on box crates and furniture so that when the slave masters walked by, they could appear not to have any instruments. Hence the start of the box drum, a symbol of rebellion, hope and joy in the midst of oppression.
What inspired you to build cajon drums?
I started building drums because I love playing them. I feel there is something spiritual to drumming. Like a heartbeat, drumming is a connection to the purest roots of time and nature. Drumming is a fundamental trigger that effects mood and environment. The deep sound of a drum has always captivated me. My passion for drums and music and my experience as a carpenter led me to experiment with drum-building using what I know best: wood. I build many different shapes and sizes of drums because I love creating new sounds. Every drum I make is unique because every piece of wood is unique, every tree is unique, so every drum has a unique sound. My hope is that a Llosh Box Drum will help you connect with yourself. That is the gift of drumming.
What makes your cajons unique?
My cajons are hand-made and custom-built to meet the needs of each drummer. Customer-driven, my drum-building is an artistic, creative, collaborative process with extreme attention to detail. I build solid instruments that are durable and dynamic, with a big sound and high quality. My mission is to create two styles of drums: the first is affordable for any player and the second is the best-sounding cajon of the highest quality. I want to focus on exotic woods, specifically Hawaiian woods. Llosh Box Drums are unique because they are three to four playable surfaces. Based on the idea of a drum kit, I strive to build the ultimate cajon that is playable on as many sides as possible to offer a variety of sounds, like a drum kit.
