FAQs

Are your bowls food safe?

Yes! We use the highest quality, organic linseed oil to finish our bowls, followed by all-natural beeswax. Both items we use to finish and polish the bowls are chemical-free and meet FDA food-safe requirements. Wood has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. In addition to making beautiful art pieces and home dรฉcor items, our wood bowls are perfect as salad bowls.

What makes your bowls special?

๐‡๐š๐ง๐๐ฆ๐š๐๐ž: Our wood bowls are handmade on the Island of Hawaiโ€™i with the utmost care and attention to detail. Therefore, each bowl is a unique, one-of-a-kind art piece. No 2 bowls are ever the same. When you purchase one of our bowls, you are supporting hand-crafted by an artist and small business, as opposed to machine-made, mass-produced by a large corporation.

No trees or branches are cut down just for our bowls. All the wood Llosh uses comes from trees/branches that are already being taken down. Llosh works with local arborists and community members to source his wood. He also collects dead fall wood on the side of the road that he can use. This sustainably-sourced woodwork is so special because it preserves wood for hundreds of years that would otherwise just rot in the ground.
๐€๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐›๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ: Did you know that wood is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobial, making it a great choice for food use? We recommend transitioning from plastic to wood kitchen items for a healthier, cleaner option.

๐Ž๐ซ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐œ ๐…๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ: We use all-natural, chemical-free oils to finish our bowls, making our bowls food safe. Youโ€™ll notice that none of our bowls have a plasticy-looking coating, because we are only using natural, food safe oils. We avoid chemicals at all cost!
๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž ๐†๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ž: Our handmade wood bowls are intended to be forever pieces, family heirlooms to be passed down for generations. We understand they are investments, intended to last. Therefore, we have a lifetime guarantee on all our pieces. If anything cracks or breaks, you can send it back to us and Llosh will repair it (free of charge!) and weโ€™ll return it to you. We strive to have the highest quality customer service.

Care Instructions

We recommend cleaning your bowl by hand (not in the dishwasher) with lukewarm water and soap. We recommend using a soft cloth or soft side of a sponge (nothing abrasive that could scratch the bowl). We suggest drying the bowl immediately after so that it does not sit wet for prolonged periods of time. We also advise against soaking the bowls or leaving them submerged in water for long periods of time. If your bowl begins to dry out, we suggest polishing it with natural beeswax and mineral oil, which can be purchased at any hardware store. The brand we like to use is Beeโ€™s Oil by Holland Bowl Mill (www.hollandbowl.com).

Custom and personalized orders

We can make custom orders if you have a specific idea in mind and you do not see it on our etsy page. We can also personalize and engrave bowls. If you are interested in either of these options, just send us a message. We strive to create a bowl you love! :)

What is a cajon?

A cajon is a box drum made out of wood. The origination of the cajon (Spanish for โ€œboxโ€ or โ€œcrateโ€), or box drum, is not entirely clear. However, one origin theory tells us a story of African slaves in Peru, South America. As a form of suppression and control, slavemasters did not allow the slaves to play their music. In intimate revolt and refusing to live without music, slaves began playing drums on box crates and furniture so that when the slavemasters walked by, they could appear not to have any instruments. Hence the start of the box drum, a symbol of joy and hope in the midst of oppression.

What inspired you to build cajon drums?

I started building drums because I love playing them. I feel there is something spiritual to drumming. Like a heartbeat, drumming is a connection to the purest roots of time and nature. Drumming is a fundamental trigger that effects mood and environment. The deep sound of a drum has always captivated me. My passion for drums and music and my experience as a carpenter led me to experiment with drum-building using what I know best: wood. I build many different shapes and sizes of drums because I love creating new sounds. Every drum I make is unique because every piece of wood is unique, every tree is unique, so every drum has a unique sound. My hope is that a Llosh Box Drum will help you connect with yourself. That is the gift of drumming.

What makes your cajons unique?

My cajons are hand-made and custom-built to meet the needs of each drummer. Customer-driven, my drum-building is an artistic, creative, collaborative process with extreme attention to detail. I build solid instruments that are durable and dynamic, with a big sound and high quality. My mission is to create two styles of drums: the first is affordable for any player and the second is the best-sounding cajon of the highest quality. I want to focus on exotic woods, specifically Hawaiian woods. Llosh Box Drums are unique because they are three to four playable surfaces. Based on the idea of a drum kit, I strive to build the ultimate cajon that is playable on as many sides as possible to offer a variety of sounds, like a drum kit.
