This elegant vase-shaped Norfolk Pine wood bowl was handmade by professional artist and bowl turner Llosh Winne on the Big Island of Hawaii. Made directly from the wood of a sustainably-sourced, locally-grown Norfolk Pine tree, the artist hand-carved, turned and sanded the bowl with the utmost care and attention to detail, then added real turquoise gemstone inlay.

In traditional Japanese kintsugi style, cracks and openings in the wood are colorfully decorated with fine turquoise gemstone inlay. As a philosophy, Japanese kintsugi treats breakage and repair as an honorable and beautiful part of the history of an object that strengthens and enhances, rather than diminishes. More than just an art form, kintsugi teaches us that the “flaws” in wood art are what make each piece unique and valuable.

This artisanal bowl is exceptionally rare because of the black spalting, which is created naturally by the decay of the tree over time. The artist allows the wood to sit in order for the unique spalted coloration to be produced, then the wood-worker has to have the insight to turn the wood into a bowl at just the right time to attain the mix of brown, tan and black colors. The spalting in the wood creates unique organically-occurring designs, making this bowl a stunning work of art.

Norfolk pine trees grow in a ringed fashion, giving the wood a unique knot pattern. The dark, circular knots are a naturally occurring area where a branch was once attached to the trunk of a tree. Knots are formed when the tree grows around a branch. The natural beauty of this intricate wood design is enhanced by the artist’s use of fine turquoise gemstone decorative inlay.
