This Podocarpus wood bowl was handmade by professional artist and bowl turner Llosh Winne on the Big Island of Hawaii. Made directly from the wood of a locally-grown, sustainably-sourced podocarpus tree, the artist hand-carved, turned and sanded the bowl with the utmost care and attention to detail, then added real turquoise gemstone inlay in a Japanese kintsugi style repair. The artist maintained a natural, live edge.
Inspired by traditional Japanese kintsugi art, cracks and openings in the wood are repaired and colorfully decorated with fine turquoise stone inlay. As a philosophy, Japanese kintsugi treats breakage and repair as an honorable and beautiful part of the history of an object that strengthens and enhances, rather than diminishes. More than just an art form, kintsugi teaches us that flaws and challenges are what make each of us unique and valuable.
We use fully organic finishing products (organic linseed oil and all-natural beeswax) making our bowls food-safe and chemical-free.
