This lama wood bowl was handmade by professional artist and bowl turner Llosh Winne on the Big Island of Hawaii. Made directly from the wood of a locally-grown, sustainably-sourced lama tree, the artist hand-carved, turned and sanded the bowl with the utmost care and attention to detail, then added real turquoise gemstone inlay. The artist maintained a natural, live edge. Inspired by traditional Japanese kintsugi art, cracks and openings in the wood are repaired and colorfully decorated with fine turquoise gemstone inlay. As a philosophy, Japanese kintsugi treats breakage and repair as an honorable and beautiful part of the history of an object that strengthens and enhances, rather than diminishes. More than just an art form, kintsugi teaches us that “flaws” and challenges are what make each of us unique and valuable. Also known as Hawaiian ebony and Hawaiian persimmon, Lama is an endemic native Hawaiian wood that has a deep cultural significance to Native Hawaiians. ln the Hawaiian language, lama means “light” . This sacred wood was used to decorate hula alters and fence posts marking sacred areas and was associated with enlightenment. We use fully organic finishing products (organic linseed oil and all-natural beeswax) making our bowls food-safe and chemical-free. 7.5 inches wide x 7 inches deep x 5 inches tall
