This beautiful, decorative wood bowl was hand-turned out of Jacaranda wood, locally-grown and sustainably-sourced on the Big Island of Hawai’i by professional artist and bowl turner Llosh Winne. The artist hand-carved, sanded and polished the wood to sculpt the bowl into a traditional calabash shape, maintained a natural, live edge, then decorated the bowl with a significant amount of real turquoise gemstone inlay. This bowl is special because of its black splating, which creates unique designs, shapes and lines in the wood, on both the inside and the outside of the bowl. The spalting on this piece creates a shape that reminds us of a Hawaiian sea turtle 🐢.
In this stunning piece, the artist fills holes and cracks in the wood with bright blue turquoise gemstones, adding beautiful color to the wood, a lovely contrast with the natural tan and brown colors of the jacaranda wood. This artistic repair style is inspired by Japanese kintsugi. More than an art form, kintsugi philosophy teaches us that what’s broken can be healed and repaired, adding beauty, character and value. Llosh Winne’s woodwork is thoughtfully-crafted, functional art, with charm that is at once both elegant and rustic.
