This artisanal wood bowl is handmade out of spalted Norfolk pine wood, sustainably-sourced locally on the Big Island of Hawaii, where this bowl was hand-turned by wood artist and bowl turner Llosh Winne. This artisanal bowl is exceptionally rare. The black spalting in the wood is created naturally by the decay of the tree over time. The artist allows the wood to sit in order for the unique spalted coloration to be produced, then the wood-worker has to have the insight to turn the wood into a bowl at just the right time to attain the mix of brown, tan and black colors. The spalting in the wood creates unique organically-occurring designs, making this bowl a stunning work of art. Norfolk pine trees grow in a ringed fashion, giving the wood a unique knot pattern. The dark, circular knots are a naturally occurring area where a branch was once attached to the trunk of a tree. Knots are formed when the tree grows around a branch.
